Fabrication in the iron and steel industry covers cutting, forming, welding and finishing steel plates and sections into finished structures and assemblies. Fabrication workshops generate cutting fume, welding fume and grinding dust, and move heavy material between bays all day.
Complete Fabrication Process Flow
Plates, sections, pipes and bar stock are received, stacked and moved to the cutting bay. Handling equipment carries the load between bays so material is not dragged across the shop floor.
Plate and section are cut to size and profiled by gas, plasma or laser cutting. Cutting releases metal fume and fine particulate, which is drawn off at the cutting table.
Cut edges are ground, bevelled and deburred before the parts are fitted up. Grinding throws off metallic dust and sparks, so the bay is kept under extraction.
Parts are fitted, tacked and welded into finished assemblies. Welding fume rises off the arc and is taken away through ducting that serves the whole shop.
Fabricated assemblies are cleaned, primed and painted before they leave the shop. Booth air carries paint mist and solvent vapour, which is treated before discharge.
Finished assemblies are staged, protected and loaded for dispatch to site.
