Incoming paddy is fed from the intake point and screened to remove straw, chaff, mud balls, stones and stray ferrous particles. Clean paddy protects the huller rolls and keeps foreign matter out of the finished rice.

The husk is split off the grain and drawn away by aspiration, leaving brown rice mixed with a share of paddy that has not yet shelled. That mixture is separated so unhusked grain returns to the huller and only dehusked rice moves forward.

The bran layer and germ are abraded off the brown rice, which is what turns the grain white. Whitening is normally taken in stages rather than a single pass, and the bran removed is drawn off the machine for separate handling.

Polishing finishes the whitened grain, lifting residual bran dust off the surface and giving the smooth appearance expected of table rice. Polished rice is cooled and settled before it goes on to grading.

Whole grains, brokens and small brokens are separated by size, and the graded rice then passes an optical sorter that rejects discoloured, chalky and damaged grains. Grading fixes the commercial grade of each stream, so head rice and brokens can be handled and sold separately.

Graded rice is held in silos, blended where a particular grade mix is required, then weighed and filled into consumer packs or bulk sacks. Filled packs are checked and pass metal detection before they are stitched or sealed and made ready for despatch.
