Cured leaf is opened out, de-stemmed and held to age, which is what develops the character of snuff. Batches move through the ageing area in bins and trolleys.

Aged leaf is dried down before grinding, since snuff is a dry powder and damp leaf will not mill cleanly. Moisture is checked on the batch before it is released to the mill.

Dried leaf is ground to a fine powder, the defining step for snuff. Grinding is enclosed and vented because the powder is very light.

The ground powder is sieved and classified so the fineness stays consistent from batch to batch. Oversize is returned to the mill.

Scents and flavour oils are blended through the powder, and the blend is then left to mature. Blending is kept gentle so the powder is not compacted.

Matured snuff is dosed into tins, sachets or small containers, sealed and coded. Filled packs pass metal detection before they are cartoned.

Snuff is handled as a fine powder throughout, so extraction points are taken at the mill, sifter, mixer and filler. Collected dust is returned or disposed of according to the plant's own procedure.
