Raw sesame carries a heavy load of field dust, sand and small stones, so cleaning is done in stages. Screens, air and de-stoning bring the seed to a state fit for washing.

Seed is washed and then soaked so that the hull swells and lifts from the kernel. The wet section is kept apart from the dry side of the plant to avoid carry-over of moisture.

The softened hull is rubbed off the seed in the hulling section. Hull and kernel are then parted on density and in an air stream, since the two are close in size.

Hulled sesame is dried back down from its wet state and then cooled before storage. Moisture is checked so that the seed is stable for packing.

Optical sorting removes unhulled, dark and stained seed from the white hulled sesame. Metal detection is applied before the seed is packed or sent for pressing.

Seed routed to oil is roasted and then pressed in an expeller to draw out til oil. The cake left after pressing is taken off as a by-product and the oil is held in tanks.

Hulled sesame is weighed and packed for food use and for export despatch. Packs may be gas flushed, as the seed is oil-rich.
