Pharmaceutical syrup manufacturing dissolves active ingredients, sugar or sugar-free base, preservatives and flavours into a stable liquid dose.
Common Process Flow
Sugar or a sugar-free base is dissolved into purified water in a steam-jacketed vessel under continuous stirring. Heating in a jacket rather than a direct flame keeps the base from scorching.
Actives, preservatives, colours and flavours are added to the base and mixed until fully dissolved or evenly suspended. Suspensions are homogenised or milled so the solid phase stays dispersed instead of settling out.
The batch is cooled, filtered to remove undissolved matter, and held in a storage vessel until the filling line calls for it. The holding vessel is kept closed and under filtered air.
Empty bottles are rinsed and inverted to drain before they reach the filler. Syrup is dosed by volume, with nozzle tracking used on products that foam during filling.
Bottles are capped and sealed, and the closure is checked so the pack does not leak in transit. Measuring cups or dosing caps are applied at this stage where the pack carries one.
Labels are applied around the bottle and batch, manufacturing and expiry details are printed on. Camera checks confirm label and code presence before the bottle is cartoned with its leaflet and cased.
