Incoming lentils are received from bags or bulk tippers and lifted into the cleaning section. Stones, mud balls, chaff, straw and stray metal are taken out before the seed reaches any milling machine.

Cleaned lentils are separated into size grades so that each fraction can be dehusked on its own setting. Grading also lifts out shrivelled and immature seed that would otherwise break during milling.

The seed is conditioned with water so that the husk loosens from the kernel, then dried back to a moisture level suited to milling. Moisture is checked before the batch is released to the huller.

Conditioned lentils pass through the dehusking section, where the outer husk is abraded away from the kernel. Unhulled seed is sifted out and returned to the huller, while the dehusked seed goes on to be split into its two cotyledons and the loose husk is drawn off by air.

Split lentils are polished to clean the surface and even out the appearance of the dal. The dal is then separated into whole, split and broken fractions, each carried on its own stream.

Optical sorting removes discoloured, stained and foreign-coloured grains from the finished dal. A final metal check is made before the product enters packing, with rejected material diverted off the line automatically.

Dal is weighed into consumer packs or bulk bags and sealed. Each pack is coded and check-weighed before it leaves the line.
