Caffeine is an alkaloid extracted from tea waste, green coffee and similar raw materials, which are cleaned, milled and steeped in hot water. The liquor is clarified and concentrated, the caffeine is crystallised out and dried, and the crystals are milled and sieved to the grade required.
Complete Raw Caffeine Process Flow
Tea waste, green coffee or similar caffeine-bearing material is received and cleaned of stones, husk and light trash. Density separation takes off the remaining heavy and light fractions, and the cleaned material is then metered forward at a steady rate.
The cleaned material is crushed and milled so that hot water can reach the caffeine held inside it. Milled material is screened, and dust is drawn off at the mill.
Milled material is steeped in hot water in stirred, jacketed vessels so the caffeine passes into solution. Heating is taken from the plant's steam and heat exchange circuit.
Spent solids are separated from the extract and the clarified liquor is concentrated. The concentrate is held in tanks ahead of crystallisation.
The concentrate is cooled so that caffeine separates out as crystals, which are then dried. Chilled water for the cooling stage comes from the plant's own circuit.
Dried caffeine is milled and classified to the powder or granular grade the buyer has specified. Sieving takes off oversize and keeps the grade consistent between batches.
Graded caffeine is weighed into bags or drums, sealed and coded. Metal detection is run on the finished pack before despatch.
